Carlos Alcaraz is a Spanish tennis player who has experienced a meteoric rise since he burst onto the scene in 2021. He has quickly established himself as one of the world’s best tennis players and all this before his twentieth birthday.
In this article we look at his background, his rise to fame, and what we can expect next.
Alcaraz’s rapid ascent to the top of the game can be attributed to several factors, including his prodigious talent, hard work, humility and the the guidance of a strong family unit and team around him. None more prominent than his mentor, former world No.1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
A ‘New’ Tennis Star
Alcaraz’s breakthrough at the highest level of the sport may seem sudden, but it is the result of years of hard work and dedication. In 2022, Alcaraz won the Miami Open and outlined his relatively modest goals for the year, which included breaking into the top 10 of the world rankings and reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. He has since smashed that prediction, becoming world number 1 and producing 12 tournament wins on the ATP Tour, including three major titles – the 2022 US Open, the 2023 Wimbledon Championship and the 2024 French Open. Such success on different surfaces at his age is incredible.
Team
Carlos has a tight-knit team around him including family and coaches. His parents, Carlos Alcaraz González and Virginia Garfia Escandon, and his three brothers, Alvaro, Sergio, and Jaime make up his close family. His father, Carlos was a former tennis player and the director at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia. He played a crucial role in building his son’s tennis career, training him from the age of four.
Alcaraz is currently coached by Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former world No. 1 and 2003 French Open champion and their partnership has been incredibly successful. His fitness coach, Alberto Lledó, is also a key part of the team.
Off the court, Albert Molina is his agent and the architect of his success off the court. He followed him from a young age and now working together, they are building some of the greatest sports partnerships.
Unlike some sports people, Alcaraz has a good team around him, his feet are on the ground and the focus is on building him as a global tennis sensation first and a global superstar around this.
A Frightening Combination
In terms of playing style, Alcaraz is a combination of the “Big 3” in men’s tennis. He possesses the fight and tenacity of Rafael Nadal, the speed and consistency of Novak Djokovic, and the fierce offense-to-defense firepower of Roger Federer. It is this unique blend of skills that has contributed to his success on the court and has made him a formidable opponent for any tennis player.
It does feel like Alcaraz has taken the game forward from the Big 3 which is something I would not have believed possible, but every generation brings something new to the game.
The Key to Success
In addition to his talent on the court, Alcaraz’s easy charm and broad grin have endeared him to crowds around the world. His positive attitude and love for the game are evident in his interviews and interactions with fans. He appears to be a genuinely decent guy.
This combination has also attracted brands who want to be associated with him. His oldest association is with the tennis racket manufacturer Babolat, where he signed a racket deal age 13. More recently he has added big brands such as Nike, BMW, Calvin Klein, and Rolex to his portfolio. There are many brands now wanting to be associated with brand Alacaraz, not only for his tennis but also the way he conducts himself. He is professional, hard working and always has a smile on his face.
What’s Next for Alcaraz?
As Carlos Alcaraz continues to climb the ranks of professional tennis, many are eager to see what the future holds for this young star. With his unique playing style, positive attitude, and dedication to the sport, Alcaraz is poised to achieve great things in the coming years.
Whether he can surpass the achievements of the “Big 3” and become a tennis legend in his own right remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the rise and rise of Carlos Alcaraz is a story worth following.
We do not have a crystal ball, but if I had to guess I would say the future is very bright for Alcaraz. His rise to the top of the game has been fast. He has done this by being humble, working hard, and being incredibly talented with a racket. He is the one person from the ‘next generation’ who I can see challenging Novak Djokovic’s grand slam record (noting that Novak is nowhere near retirement).
We will continue to enjoy watching Carlos Alcaraz improve and take the game to new heights. He will also raise the bar of his opponents around him so the future looks bright for tennis.
Here is a fun fact – Carlos doesn’t actually like the name Carlos, he prefers to be called Carlitos or Charlie, he thinks Carlos is too formal!
