Playing tennis is a great way to stay fit, improve your coordination, and have fun. A tennis coach will always tell their pupils to be ‘on their toes’ and ‘leaning forwards’.

However, if you have flat feet, you may experience some challenges when it comes to finding the right shoes to play in. Tennis shoes are designed to provide balance, support, and cushioning, which are essential when playing on hard courts. So, if you have flat feet, you need to be extra careful when selecting tennis shoes to avoid discomfort and injury.

In this blog, we will discuss the best tennis shoes for flat feet and give you some helpful tips for choosing the right pair for your needs. We know that finding the perfect tennis shoes can be daunting, so we want to make it easier for you. By the end of this post, you will have a better understanding of what to look for when shopping for tennis shoes.

What are Flat Feet?

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, is a common condition where the foot has little to no arch, and the entire sole touches the ground when standing. This condition can lead to overpronation, which means your foot rolls inward too much when walking or running. Flat feet can be genetically inherited, and it can also occur in obese individuals or as a result of injury.

Why is it Important to Get The Right Shoes?

Choosing the right shoes is crucial, especially for those with flat feet. Flat feet put extra stress on your foot, leading to pain, discomfort, and even injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis, or knee problems. If you have flat feet and wear shoes that aren’t suitable for your condition, you’re susceptible to various foot and body problems. Improperly fitted shoes can lead to:

  1. Bunions: Bony lumps that form at the base of your big toe, creating pain and discomfort.
  2. Hammer Toe: This condition causes your toe to bend or curl downward instead of pointing forward, often due to ill-fitting shoes.
  3. Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot, resulting in heel pain.
  4. Achilles Tendonitis: Inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects your calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone.
  5. Shin Splints: Pain felt along the front of your lower leg, at the shin bone, often caused by overuse or wearing unsupportive shoes.
  6. Back Pain: Poor footwear can lead to misalignment in your feet, which in turn affects your posture and can cause back pain.
  7. Corns and Calluses: These are areas of thickened skin that form as a reaction to excessive pressure or friction on one area of the skin, often the result of wearing shoes that are too tight.

Remember, wearing the right tennis shoes is not just about improving your game; it’s also about maintaining your overall foot and body health.

The Best Tennis Shoes For Flat Feet – Our Review

When shopping for tennis shoes for flat feet, there are several features to look for. You want shoes that offer ample arch support, a firm midsole, and enough cushioning to reduce the impact on your feet and joints. Here are some of the best tennis shoes for flat feet:

ASICS Men’s Gel-Challenger 12 – Editors’ Top Pick

We have written reviews on other ASICS tennis shoes
on this site. It is fair to say we are big fans of their
shoes at Tennis Pursuits, in our view they have truly
outdone themselves with the updated version of the
classic Asics Gel Challenger 11. The Gel Challenger
series has long been recognized as one of the top
choices for tennis players with flat feet, and the Gel Challenger 12 certainly lives up to that reputation.

Traditionally, Asics has utilized EVA material for the midsole; however, with this particular model, they have made a switch to the lighter-weight Solyte material, and the outcome is truly impressive. The Solyte midsole not only significantly reduces weight but also provides exceptional performance on the court. Individuals with flat feet will appreciate the robust arch support that the ASICS Gel Challenger 12 offers. Your foot is well-supported in this shoe.

Moreover, for those who often experience heel pain, the Asics Gel Challenger 12 incorporates a gel cushioning system to minimize vibrations upon landing. This feature ensures a cloud-like walking experience, making it an incredibly popular choice among tennis enthusiasts. Literally walking on air!

With the release of the ASICS Gel Challenger 12, ASICS aims to keep up its tradition of providing remarkable tennis shoes at an affordable price point. Notably, this shoe offers added padding around the ankle and midfoot for optimal comfort which is welcomed by those suffering with flat feet, although it falls slightly short in terms of breathability.

All in all, the ASICS Gel Challenger 12 is an excellent investment for tennis players, combining exceptional quality, performance, and value for money.

New Balance MC 996v4

So let me start by being truthful, it took me a while to take these shoes seriously. Firstly they have a strange name (like a code name). Once past that I had to get over my view that New Balance makes excellent running shoes but is not a known entity in tennis. Well, I got that wrong as they now make some excellent tennis shoes.

These guys know what people need to look after their feet given their running heritage. The tennis shoe from New Balance offers exceptional stability and support thanks to its Fresh Foam midsole and Ndurance rubber outsole. Its upper is made of breathable mesh and synthetic materials, providing excellent ventilation and durability.

As a tennis writer, make sure you add this shoe to your wish list if you’re seeking a lightweight and well-cushioned option with excellent court connection and ample support.

Compared to previous models, the New Balance 996v4 delivers significantly more rebound and cushioning, although the forefoot cushioning remains limited. However, it offers a vastly improved underfoot feel compared to previous iterations, with ample ankle cushioning and support despite being a relatively low-cut shoe.

I have read that more colors are needed, the shoes come in a range of funky colors. If you’re looking for a well-priced shoe to support your feet, look no further.

Babalot Jet

Better known for their excellent rackets, Babolat has significantly invested in the development of their tennis shoes in recent years. We found the initial models to be notably bulky, heavy, and aesthetically unappealing. However, the new generation of Babolat shoes has undergone remarkable improvements. These shoes are now lightweight, look good, and have become my preferred choice for years.

For individuals with flat feet, the Babolat Jet Tennis Shoes are highly recommended, not just by us but by others we have asked in the market. In terms of weight, they are lighter compared to the flagship Propulse shoe. Moreover, these shoes provide exceptional comfort, thanks to the Michelin rubber outsole, effective arch support, and durable sole.

If you prefer running shoes, the Babolat Jet is an excellent option. The shoe’s well-cushioned heel demonstrates its superior level of comfort. The well-built sole offers outstanding support and shock absorption, without compromising agility due to excessive bulkiness.

They strike a remarkable balance between being lightweight running shoes and providing ample support for players with low arches. The only downside we have heard from some people is around durability and the ability to withstand rough use over time.

We highly recommend it.
